Bills hire female British football player Phoebe Schecter as coaching intern

The Buffalo Bills tapped a British football player and coach as one their interns for training camp.

The hiring of Phoebe Schecter, a member of the women’s Great Britain National Tackle Football team, comes after the Bills made Kathryn Smith the first female full-time assistant coach in January 2016. Smith was not retained after the Bills fired Rex Ryan late last season.

Schecter, 26, met Bills co-owner Kim Pegula at the Women’s Careers in Football, a league-sponsored event before the Pro Bowl in January, The Sporting News reported. Along with playing strong safety for the men’s Staffordshire Surge football club and the country’s national women’s team, she also coaches both men’s and women’s football for Staffordshire.

Schecter, who grew up in Connecticut as the daughter of a British mother and American father, moved to Great Britain in 2012 and began playing organized football.

Schecter joins Kade Rannings, Lonnie Teasley and Byron Thomas as the Buffalo interns under the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship program.
