The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) is excited to announce its world championship schedule through 2024. Featuring events in Men’s, Women’s, U-19, U-20, and Flag (Men’s and Women’s) disciplines, this solidified schedule is the natural consequence of IFAF’s emergence after prevailing in its legal proceedings in October and offers IFAF and its members the opportunity to plan for the best quality and competitive events moving forward.
IFAF leadership thanks all stakeholders involved in this process and looks forward to building on the success of the 2018 U-19 World Championship held in Mexico and the 2018 Flag World Championship held in Panama. Both host countries executed impressive events, and we expect the same will hold true with the geographically diverse set of world championships, which will be played across at least 4 continents, showcasing the true global nature of American Football in both the tackle and flag disciplines and offering opportunities for many to engage with the game as it continues to grow in popularity and participation across the world.
This announcement includes a rescheduling of the Men’s World Championship, originally scheduled for 2019 in Australia, to the next natural slot for that event in 2023. IFAF has worked with Gridiron Australia in this regard, and with much gratitude for all of Gridiron Australia’s efforts IFAF has provisionally awarded the event to them for 2023. IFAF thanks Gridiron Australia for its cooperation during this process. This decision was made carefully and is due to compressed planning timelines outside of IFAF’s and Gridiron Australia’s control.
“We are grateful to our diverse IFAF membership and Gridiron Australia in particular and are excited to announce such an impressive list of world championships,” said IFAF President Richard MacLean. “As IFAF continues its renaissance, this slate of events and widespread footprint shows the interest in American Football across the globe and will provide people of all backgrounds an opportunity to interact further with the sport.”
The full schedule of events follows. Hosting rights for the 2024 inaugural U-20 World Championship and Flag World Championships are expected to be awarded at IFAF’s 2019 Congress once full bids have been evaluated.YearEventHost2020U-19 World ChampionshipUSA2020Flag World ChampionshipsKorea2021Women’s World ChampionshipFinland2022Flag World ChampionshipsTBD2023Men’s World ChampionshipAustralia2024U-20 World ChampionshipTBD2024Flag World ChampionshipsTBD
