WYOMING – History was made in Wyoming this week when the Lovell Bulldogs named Jennifer Gardner its new high school football coach. She becomes the first female in state history to head a high school football team.
For Gardner, it’s a promotion. She was assistant coach for the varsity team working primarily with the offensive and defensive lines. She also teaches math at Lovell High School.
“I am humbled by the amount of supportive comments I have received since my hiring was announced. I realize this is a historic event and I am honored to show girls everywhere that with hard work and dedication they can follow their passions,” Gardner told Buckrail. “My plan is to continue the winning tradition Coach [Doug] Hazen has created, so the fact that I am a woman becomes a non-issue.”
Hazen took the Bulldogs to a 4-5 season last year. He stepped down last November to spend more time with his family.
